12ThenJesusagainspoke to them, saying, "1I am the Light of the world; 2he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life."
13
So the Phariseessaid to Him, "3You are testifyingaboutYourself; Your testimony is not true."
14
Jesusanswered and said to them, "4Evenif I testifyaboutMyself, My testimony is true, for I know5where I came from and where I am going; but 6you do not knowwhere I come from orwhere I am going.
15
"7You judgeaccording to the flesh; 8I am not judginganyone.
16
"But even9if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me.
17
"Even in 10your law it has been written that the testimony of 11twomen is true.
18
"I am He who testifiesaboutMyself, and 12the Father who sent Me testifiesabout Me."
19
So they were saying to Him, "Where is Your Father?" Jesusanswered, "You knowneither Me nor My Father; 13if you knew Me, you would know My Fatheralso."
20
Thesewords He spoke in 14the treasury, as 15He taught in the temple; and nooneseized Him, because16His hour had not yetcome.
21
Then He saidagain to them, "I goaway, and 17you will seek Me, and 18will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot*come."
22
So19the Jews were saying, "Surely He will not killHimself, will He, since He says, '20Where I am going, you cannot*come '?"
23
And He was saying to them, "21You are from below, I am from above; 22you are of thisworld, 23I am not of thisworld.
24
"Therefore I said to you that you 24will die in your sins; for unless* you believe that 25I am He, 26you will die in your sins."
25
So they were saying to Him, "Who are You?" Jesussaid to them, "What* have I been saying to you from the beginning?
26
"I havemanythings to speak and to judgeconcerning you, but 27He who sent Me is true; and 28the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world."
27
They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father.
28
SoJesussaid, "When you 29lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that 30I am He, and 31I donothing on My owninitiative, but I speakthesethings as the Fathertaught Me.
29
"And He who sent Me is with Me; 32He has not left Me alone, for 33I alwaysdo the things that are pleasing to Him."
30
As He spokethesethings, 34many came to believe in Him.
The Truth Will Make You Free
31SoJesus was saying to thoseJews who had believed Him, "35If you continue in My word, then you are truly36disciples of Mine;
32
and 37you will know the truth, and 38the truth will make you free."
33
They answered Him, "39We are Abraham'sdescendants and have never*yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, 'You will becomefree '?"
34
Jesusanswered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, 40everyone who commitssin is the slave of sin.
35
"41The slave does not remain in the houseforever; 42the son does remainforever.
36
"Soif the Son43makes you free, you will be freeindeed.
37
"I know that you are 44Abraham'sdescendants; yet45you seek to kill Me, because My wordhasnoplace in you.
38
"I speak the things which I have seen with My Father; therefore you alsodo the things which you heard from 46your father."
39
They answered and said to Him, "Abraham is 47our father." Jesussaid to them, "48If you are Abraham'schildren, do the deeds of Abraham.
40
"But as it is, 49you are seeking to kill Me, a manwho has 50told you the truth, which I heard from God; thisAbraham did not do.
41
"You are doing the deeds of 51your father." They said to Him, "We were not born of fornication; 52we haveoneFather: God."
42
Jesussaid to them, "IfGod were your Father, 53you would love Me, 54for I proceededforth and havecome from God, for I have 55not evencome on My owninitiative, but 56He sent Me.
43
"Why* do you not understand57what I am saying? It is because you cannot*58hear My word.
44
"59You are of 60your father the devil, and 61you want to do the desires of your father. 62He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truthbecause63there is notruth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he 64speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
45
"But because65I speak the truth, you do not believe Me.
46
"Whichone of you convicts Me of sin? If66I speaktruth, why* do you not believe Me?
47
"67He who is of Godhears the words of God; for thisreason you do not hear them, because you are not of God."
48
68The Jewsanswered and said to Him, "Do we not sayrightly that You are a 69Samaritan and 70have a demon?"
49
Jesusanswered, "I do not 71have a demon; but I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.
50
"But 72I do not seek My glory; there is One who seeks and judges.
51
"Truly, truly, I say to you, ifanyone73keeps My word he will never*74seedeath."
52
75The Jewssaid to Him, "Now we know that You 76have a demon. Abrahamdied, and the prophets also; and You say, 'Ifanyone77keeps My word, he will never*78taste of death.'
53
"Surely You 79are not greater than our fatherAbraham, whodied? The prophetsdiedtoo; whom do You makeYourself out to be?"
54
Jesusanswered, "80If I glorifyMyself, My glory is nothing; 81it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, 'He is our God ';
55
and 82you have not come to know Him, 83but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be 84a liarlike you, 85but I do know Him and 86keep His word.
56
"87Your fatherAbraham88rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad."
57
89So the Jewssaid to Him, "You are not yetfiftyyears old, and have You seenAbraham?"
58
Jesussaid to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, beforeAbraham was born, 90I am."
59
Therefore they 91picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus92hid Himself and went out of the temple.
